Wedding Photography Style – B&W and Color

There are so many meanings and definitions that fall under the word “style.” Most often, it is referred to as a couple preferring, or photographer capturing in, a candid or photojournalistic fashion, versus posed. However, there are many things to consider when choosing a photographer and the style you associate with. For this post, I am going to address the use of Color and Black and White processing. Take a look at the next two Wedding Photography Style examples.

When we talk about style, it is important to address every aspect of the word as it relates to your wedding day. I am old school when it comes to processing in black and white. The fact of the matter is that every image does not deserve to be black and white, just as some scream to be black and white. It is all about storytelling. You see, black and white imagery let’s imagination take over. We add colors, in our mind’s eye, based on what we have experienced in the world and in our life. It is one of the things that makes black and white so powerful – when done correctly. Control of light is super important in black and white. You need contrast to guide you through the image – as seen in the image up top.

Now let’s talk about color. I like punch in my colors. This bride’s skin tones are spot on. The blue flower in her hair is punchy, so is the green in the grass. However, the color is not out of control where it should not be. The greens for example. They are so rich they are near the point of distortion. But, they are consistent and ultimately set the bride apart from the pic. Good use of color. Boom!

Here is another pic… or two…

Punchy colors. But creative control. That is my style and approach – when it comes to color, black and white, and Wedding Photography Styles. Maybe for the next post I will talk about shooting the cake. Maybe you could leave a comment below and suggest a topic!
